The election of Federico Peña Essay Example for Free
The election of Federico Pea EssayBoth the election of Federico Pea as capital of Colorado city Mayor in 1983 and the campaign of Victor Morales for US Senate in 1996 were considered as historic firsts Pea was among the first Hispanics to be elected as mayor of a major US city while it was as well the first metre that the senatorial candidate of a major political caller in Texas was of Hispanic origin, in the case of Morales. Apparently, these two cases have given renewed chase on the study of participation of minorities in a pluralist democracy, such as in this case, the Hispanics in the US electoral exercises. Not unless that Hispanics seldom ran for elected office, it was also the general observation that they were less politically energetic and were also loth to exercise their rights to vote as seen in the pattern of low voter turnouts across the US. However, the case of Pea was historic not only beca pulmonary tuberculosis it was the first time that Denver had a Mex ican American mayor, but also because of the record turnout in 1983. Pea, as well as Morales, actively attempted to plus minority, particularly Hispanic voter turnout. To his credit, the high turnout which favored Peas campaign did not consist solely of Mexican Americans, because he was fitting to build a liberal coalition of minorities which did not only include the ethnic and racial minorities but also cut across different socio-economic classes and interest groups.Morales, on the other hand relied heavily on the large Hispanic population in Texas. Even if the Morales campaign was able to encourage Hispanics to register also at a record-high only 45.4% of the registered Hispanic voters actually voted. Morales failure to lure more Hispanics to vote, compounded by his lack of appeal to the Anglo voters due to his disparaging racial remarks, resulted in his loss, albeit with a slim margin, to the incumbent re-electionist senator. On his part, Pea was able to avoid a campaign divi ded on racial lines because his being active in Mexican American civic organizations and his stint as a legislator helped him project support to minority concerns without necessarily delving on racial issues. As such, subsist had increased the quality of Pea as a candidate, in contrast to Morales. Pea is a lawyer and was a share of the state House of Representatives to begin with he ran for the mayoralty race while Morales, who is a public school teacher, only had his formal political experience when he became city councilman and a Democratic company precinct chairman. Political experience had also tremendous impact on their organizational and coalition-building skills.Although they both operated their campaigns on relatively limited cash in hand, Pea in 1983, was able to use his strong ties with the labor sector, neighborhood organizations, environmentalists, young professionals and other sectors, and was able to come-up with a dynamic, well-organized campaign supported by endo rsements of important societal groups, his clear targets on issues, and a large number of able volunteers. Wide knowledge on different issues also worked to Peas advantage while the lack of it had been a bring low to Morales, especially as it was also one of the reasons why he was not able to establish sustainable rapport with the free media. Moreover, Morales had not been a member of any local Mexican American organization which could have provided him with the necessary grassroots or volunteer support and fund-raising skills. Morales even shunned the Hispanic political elites when he missed a meeting of state Hispanic elected officials a very influential group who could have given him all-out support only because he is Hispanic. Morales also had poor organizational skills as his campaign was described to be supported by inexperienced and underfinanced staff that could not even pass away calls or answer simple questions about their candidates campaign, mainly due to insistence o f Morales to decide on almost every matter. The lack of funds had also wasted a lot of campaign time for Morales who insisted on travel in his truck instead of by plane to his campaign appearances in different locations in Texas. This and his reliance on volunteers, made him resort to the inexpensive but time- and energy-consuming block walking in his campaigns. The ordeal of walking or traveling on truck around a large US State, however, was not present in Peas bid for city mayor although exchangeable Morales, Pea also preferred open and face-to-face interaction, as in the latters town meetings, which he often held when he was elected as mayor of Denver City.Morales difficulty in funding could also be attributed to his fund-raising principles. For one, he did not accept contributions from business political action committees or entities associated with the baccy companies. He also believed that his amazing win in the Democratic primaries, wherein he spent only $15,000, would carr y him through the state elections. He also likely expected the Democratic Party to fund his campaign, which in turn, did not support him because it did not believe that he stood a chance against the incumbent Senator who had been in the position for 12 years and was supported by a campaign machinery that was at least six times bigger than his. Morales should have accepted the importance of notes in a state-wide campaign and realized that he could not run a city campaign headquarters with just $200 (his monthly figure allocation for his Houston office).Lastly, even if the Democratic Party did not support Morales campaign financially, his nomination helped him obtain the Democratic votes, which contributed to his close bid in the senatorial race, despite the apparent Republican character of the Texas state at that time.Denvers mayoralty race in 1983, was however, nonpartisan because Peas strong contenders were also democrats, His party membership only mattered in 1987 when he ran f or re-election against a Republican candidate, to which he almost lost because many of his constituents were already disappointed for his failure to make Denver a great city after his first term, and because Pea could not focus on specific minority concerns since he was constrained to form stiff governing coalitions. Ironically, Morales campaign became a legacy not only because of his unquestioned status as an outsider in the political game, but also because he was overcame only by a slight majority even if he had to battle all the odds during his unusual campaign.

Building an Ethical Organization Essay Example for Free
Building an Ethical Organization EssayWhen building an cheek the main focus leave be to sponsor the public with specific leads. We get out have to build the business on ethics and human service laws. The main goal is to serve well those in need and do this with respect and caring. There are many ways to run an organization and we need to choose the right go to meet the needs in the community we serve. The organization is for the help for people living with Alzheimers and the people that love them. We will be there to offer services for the person agony from the disease and their families. The services offered will be assistance at home, a move in if necessary, advise for the family, and client, and a residential home. Services include shopping, sit when a day out might be needed. We will offer a class to help the family understand the disease and its patterned advance, and have group counseling to help them support each other. This is a non for profit organization. Helping people should be top priority over making m singley. Human services are about helping the people in our communities in need of services. The mission statement To support and develop programs through education to teach how to live with the daily changes, and to strengthen family ties. We have to let them know they can count on us for understanding and support. This will support the ethical system by keeping the respect and dignity of our clients, supporting them in their time of need, and giving the family the support that is needed to face the day-to-day heartache that comes with watching your loved one suffer. The message that this mission statement will put out in the community is we will be there for them. We will not turn them external when the need is there. We have let the community know they can count on us to provide the necessary services to their loved ones, and also help them through a difficult time. Coping with this disease is not an easy thing to do. The servi ces that will be provided will help the families understandthat this does not have to be a burden, and will help them to know that their loved one is getting the necessary care and love to help them in the progression of this disease. Having an ethical leader in the organization will help to have ethical social workers. Having a leader that is respected and trusted in the community will benefit the organization as well as the community and clients. The organization is only as good as its leaders. Our values in the organization will be Commitment to the public, commitment to superior service and to maintain the publics trust, and respect. Having empathy for our clients and their families, dignity and self-worth of in all that fitk help, and the importance of human relationships. Respecting the miscellany of our clients and their families at all times, and we will not discriminate against anyone for any reason. Treating our clients with the dignity and respect that every human bein g is entitled to is what can be pass judgment when they walk through the door. This helps support the vision that the organization has for its future. To have our clients and their families living with dignity and having control over a terrible disease, to have the community see and know that our clients receive the services to have as happy a life as possible. The staff will be highly trained in the area of Alzheimers to assist, and care for our clients, and be there to help the families with all the means available to the organization. We can put all this into action within the organization, and this will benefit the clients and community as well as the employees. We need an ethical leader who can set an example for the employees. The leader will need to incessantly show their leadership with the ethics that we want to have within the organization. This will help teach the employees how to behave and always keep the mission in caput and work toward the vision that the organizati on has for the community and the clients. Abiding by the ethics laws and the human service laws will help with the reckon of conduct that is expected of all employees in the organization. According to Statement of values and code of ethics for nonprofit and philanthropic organizations (2004) going through the carry out with the board and staff also begins to immerse into the culture of the organization recognition of how important it is to address issues of values and ethics on an ongoing basis. All the employees need to be involved with the process so they fully understand what is expected of their behavior in the organization every day. When difficult situations arise with clients allemployees will handle the situation the identical way, and make sure that the client has their needs met in an ethical and respectful way. Social workers have a code of ethics that are an important art object of the job. According to NASW (2013) social workers have an ethical responsibility to the ir clients, self-determination, competence, social diversity, privacy and confidentiality. All laws will be posted around the organization so they will be seen daily and keep the mission in the minds of the employees daily. Our clients will respect the organization and the employees for always using ethical conduct and fairness when it concerns helping them assure the right services that work. If more services are needed than we have to offer the clients they can have peace knowing they will be displace to an ethical place to have the services needed that will work together with what we offer the clients. When a social worker in the organization as not conducted themselves in an ethical way, and has caused problems will be reprimanded. The clients dignity comes first in the organization. Dealing with a disease that has no repossess is devastating to the family, and it is a horrific disease for the client to deal with. Having caring people treating them with love and respect makes a big difference in their world. whirl as much assistance as we can by the programs we have and services we offer will make a big difference in their day-to-day routine. Letting them know they are not alone, and we will be there to make it a bit easier to get through.ReferencesStatement of values and code of ethics for nonprofit and philanthropic organizations. Assignment On Aircraft Power Systems
Assignment On Aircraft effect arrangingsIn this assignment, I intend to provide a brief presentation about the article of belief of operation of the aircraft electrical authority trunks, specifically, Integrated Drive Generators (IDG) in a modern aircraft. I will comp be and contrast the fluid and electrical methods of causation generation and give a brief on the safety precautions to be followed when handling aircraft electrical power supplies and during a functional test. There are versatile kinds of power generation on an aircraft, namely electrical (generators batteries), fluid (hydraulics pneumatics). Depending upon the application, the power sources may vary.AIRCRAFT electrical SYSTEMThe important function of any aircraft electrical system is to generate, regulate and distribute the electrical power in the aircraft. Modern aircrafts pulmonary tuberculosis more electrical power as they are equipped with more electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS). This is done so as to subvert pollution in the environment, for a clean and safe flight.Electrical power is utilise to operateAircraft Flight Instrument- Electronic Centralized Aircraft Monitoring (ECAM)Essential Systems- Primary Flight Display (PFD), Navigation Display (ND)Passenger Services- In-Flight Entertainment (IFE)Most of the aircraft systems use a power standard of 115 emailprotected 400Hz 28VDC.There are mingled electrical power sources on the aircraftEngine Driven AC Generators (EDG)Auxiliary Power Units (APU)Ram Air Turbine (RAT) assault and battery SupplyExternal/Ground Supply (Spoor, 2012)Components in an electrical system includeAC Generator/Alternator produces AC power. ageless Speed Drive Unit (CSDU) regulates the rotating speed (input) to deliver a unbroken outturn from the engine to the generator.Integrated Drive Generator (IDG), Generator and CSDU connected every coaxially or side-by-side. Airbus A380 has four engines and four generators. Whereas, Boeing 777 has two engines and two generators. The power produced by these generators is used to power up the entire aircraft. (Boeing, 2012)All the a nonher(prenominal) power sources, except external supply, are used in case of emergencies only.External power supply is used on ground when the engines and the APU are not running. It is supplied via Ground Power Unit (GPU). GPU can be portable or stationary and they provide AC power through the external plug on the nose of the aircraft. They can be used to power up an entire aircraft or a specific area in the aircraft. (Spoor, 2012)Figure Aircraft Electrical System (Classic Jet Sims, 2012)AIRCRAFT HYDRAULIC SYSTEMThe principle of a hydraulic system is to convert fluid power into mechanical power and then use it for various applications on the aircraf t, such as extension/retraction of landing gears, flaps, and speed and wheel brakes. The power source here is the hydraulic fluid. The pressure for generating the hydraulic power is supplied by the Engine Driven Pump (EDP) and the Electric Motor Driven Pump (EMDP). They are both mounted on the engines.Commonly used hydraulic fluids on the aircraft areMIL-H-5606 (Mineral Based Fluid)MIL-H-83282 (Synthetic Hydrocarbon Based Fluid)MIL-H-87257 (Same as MIL-H-83282, but it has been improved in its low temperature viscosity)MIL-H-8446 (Phosphate-Ester Based Fluid) (Wikipedia, 2012)Special care must be interpreted when handling the hydraulic fluid. Some of the hydraulic fluids are skin/eye irritant. Also it is extremely important for the fluid to be free from any contaminant for flight safety.Advantages of the hydraulic system as a power source includesLightweightEasy installation alter InspectionMinimum Maintenance somewhat 100% system efficiency, with only negligible loss due to friction . When the secondary methods fail, batteries are used as the last repeat for a safe landing and evacuation.AUXILIARY POWER whole (APU)Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) is a small gas turbine engine which provides electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic power (depending on the design) for ground or in-flight operations. It is also used as a backup source in emergency situations. It is commonly found on large aircrafts. It is usually located in the tail end of the aircraft. When started, it normally runs on 100% speed. It produces 115VAC 400Hz. Some can also generate 28VDC.The main purpose of the APU i s to start the engines in the aircraft. This is because the engine requires high rotational speed for its self-sufficing operation. In this case, APU is started by battery or hydraulic accumulator and then used to generate the necessary rotational speed. It is also used to run the equipment when the engines are shutdown. This is used for air conditioning for the passengers prior to engine start. However, it can also be connected to a hydraulic pump to power up hydraulic equipment (flaps and flight controls). (Wikipedia 2012)RAM AIR TURBINE (RAT)Ram Air Turbine is a small airflow driven turbine that is connected to either a hydraulic pump or an emergency alternator or a main generator. In normal flight, it is stowed away in closed compartment in wing or fuselage. It is deployed only when there is broad(a) power loss due to engine failures. It provides enough power to run the critical systems, such as, flight controls. The power generated by the RAT depends on the airspeed. more th an the speed, more the power generated will be. Some aircrafts use RAT in normal operation. For example, in crop dusting RAT is used to power up the chemical substance sprayer. (Wikipedia, 2012)BATTERYAircraft batteries are used to start the engines or the APU. But they are also used in emergency situations as a last resort for safe landing. There have been cases where it has been used to restart the engines even after engine flame-out. They also act as a buffer for the DC connections. It regulates the emf to ensure the power quality for the equipment connected to it.Two types of batteries are used in aircrafts today, Lead-acid and Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd). Lead-acid batteries are either valve regulated or vented. They are used in light and general aircrafts. Ni-Cd batteries are used in larger aircrafts. Lead-acid batteries are generally heavier and have less capacity than the Ni-Cd ones. (Dr. Thomas, 2010)Figure Lead-Acid Battery (Chief Aircraft, 2012) Figure 4 Nickel-Cadmium Batte ry (Surplustraders.net, 2012)AIRCRAFT ELECTRICAL SYSTEM USING FREQUENCY WILD AC GENERATORFrom 1950s to early 1960s some turboprop aircrafts used frequency wild, now Variable Frequency (VF) system. Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner are some of the modern civil aviation aircrafts that have adopted the VF system again.Figure Simplified Frequency Wild System (Scribd, 2012)CONSTRUCTIONAs shown in Fig.4, the Variable Frequency Generator (VFG) is directly connected to the engine gear box. (Langlois, 2004) states VFG is a formulaic wound rotor synchronous alternator. There is no CSD or IDG in this system. This is done so as to improve the reliability of the system and also to reduce the weight of the aircraft. Airbus A380 uses aluminium cables instead of copper for weight reduction. The system is also fully computerized. Contactors and Breakers have been replaced by solid-state devices for increased reliability and transaction (Global Aircraft, 2012).OPERATIONFrequency Wild AC power can only be supplied to the resistive circuits such as the electrical heater, engine de-icing heaters, windshield heating, and so forth as shown in Fig. 4. The AC power generated is sent to the TRU where the potency is stepped down from 360Hz-760Hz (Langlois, 2004) to 28V and then rectified to DC voltage. Then it is used by the DC components. see to it PROTECTIONA traditional Constant Frequency unit has only a constant frequency of 400Hz voltage supply. A constant speed drive unit drives the generator. It is also expensive and not easy to maintain. A VFG is flexible as it can handle a range of frequencies rather than a constant one. In this unit, there is no CSD or IDG. It is more advantageous over Constant Frequency Unit becauseIt has low maintenanceLong lifespanCheaper offshoot temperature is controlled within VFG itself.Equipment protection from excess torque damageThe variable frequency generator (VFG) is used on applications with a high percentage of resistive AC or DC loads and provides power to many of the next generation aircraft. Hamilton Sundstrands variable frequency starter generator (VFSG) and motor controller system provides main engine start and control. The voltage is controlled around the generator. This is done by controlling field strength of the AC generator by feedback signal from the voltage regulator, which keeps the voltage constant irrespective of the speed and load variations.VFGs are preferred over DC systems because they were much less affected by poor brush mental process at higher altitudes and they had better power to weight ratio.AC/DC ELECTRIC MOTORS AND ACTUATORS PERFORMANCEDC actuators are typically high-speed reversible series-wound motors. Their output is converted to driving torque using step-down gearbox. These motor actuators are self-contained units, as they combine both electrical and mechanical devices. They can hold linear thrust over a short distance.AC MOTORDC MOTOR

In this project, we develop an effective password tool by using the six thinking hats model as a mechanism. And in this section, we will go through some stick outground schooling for this project. They ar specific definitions link up to this project, the need e-learning resource and we will in any case use the sort outingw be and 3C collaborationismism model to analysis online preaching tool. BackgroundThe need of e-learning resources in Hong KongIn October 2009, the learning Bureau of Hong Kong (2009)1 released a report related to e-learning entitled Working radical on Textbooks and e-Learning Resources Developmen t. The report stated that it is a global t residuumency to use e-learning in education and there is a paradigm shift in school judgment of conviction education from a text- run aground and teacher-centered mode to a to a greater extent interactional and learner-centered mode. E-learning resources are further to develop in order to enhance the learning effectiveness and suffer the educatee a best mode to learn. The Secretary for Education has announced to launch a three-year Promoting e-learning pilot scheme in 20- 30 primary and secondary winding schools in the 2010/2011 school year. From the supra, we potty see there is a potential need to develop an effective learning tool for education in Hong Kong based on the g everyplacenment policy. What is get a line base Learning?Project Based learning (PBL) is a conceptual model that fit learning into projects. fit to the definitions in the PBL handbook2 for teachers, projects are consist of diametric tasks, based on gainsay o ccupations, that take scholars to design, problem-solving, finish making, or investigative activities Mean date PBL allows the bookman to work relatively autonomously over extended periods of m and eventually come up with a rea reheelic products or presentations. The definition above is too abstract that gouge non distinguish the different between projects and the instance of PBL. According to Thomas (2000)3, he proposed five criteria that an blatant of PBL project should extradite. They are primordiality, driving call into suspicion, constructive investigations, autonomy, and realism.PBL projects are primordial, non peripheral to the curriculum.Projects are the curriculum. The central teaching strategy in PBL is the project itself. Students learn the central concepts through projects. The centrality here means educatees learn things that are outside the curriculum are non examples of PBL. For example, illustrations, examples, additional practice, or practical applicat ions the likes of password is only when an application of the projects, it is not considered to be the instance of PBL.PBL projects are cogitate on questions or problems that seclude up schoolchilds to encounter (and struggle with) the central concepts and principles of a discipline. The project has to be intimately a driving question or an ill-defined problem which slew impel the student to learn. The question that student pursue, as well as the applications mentioned in the last paragraph, must be well combined in the service of an all important(p) intellectual purpose.Projects involve students in a constructive investigation. In order to be consider as a PBL project. Based on the PBL project, the students are able to commuteation and mental synthesis of cognition, making new soul and achievement by the PBL activities. If the project represents no herculeany to the student or it is slightly the already-learnt knowledge, the project is an do and it is not a PBL proje ct.Projects are student-driven to some signifi bungholet levelThere is no expected, predetermined outcome for the PBL projects. It is because the PBL projects not like traditional teaching method and projects, it is exceedingly dependent to the students choice, face and responsibility.Projects are realistic, not school-like.The PBL project give the student a sapiditying of authenticity, it is because of the topic, the tasks, the roles that the students play incorporates real-life challenges where the focus is on authentic (not simulated) problems or questions and where solutions hold the potential to be implemented. Why Project Based Learning is effectiveAccording to George Lucas Educational Foundation (2001), the project based learning is effective for student as it is student driven, based on this situation, the attendance of the student will increase and and then increase their self-confidence, motivate them to participate in the projectSecondly, seek show that the academi c gains equal to or better than those generated by different models, with students involved in projects taking greater responsibility for their own learning than during to a greater extent than traditional categoriseroom activities (Boaler, 1997 SRI, 2000 )Opportunities to develop complex skills, such as higher-order thinking, problem-solving, collaborating, and communicating (SRI, 2000)Access to a broader revolve of learning opportunities in the classroom, providing a strategy for prosecute culturally diverse learners (Railsback, 2002)The problemsThere are many tidings tools available in the web space only when seldom of them are designed for learning. Especially, they pee addition feature to facilitate learning and at least, the usability of the online tools. For the learning facilitation, we would like to point out an effective intelligence tools should help the participant to learn remainsatically. It is because, our consciousness was train to think inside the box (hab it). This whitethorn moderate our thought and conciliate the banter low affectivity. For the user usability, remonstrate confusion is one of different problems for online news tools. Thirunarayanan, M. O. (2000)4 suggests that there whitethorn be chat or talk overlap in chat rooms as the student and teacher provide their responses at their unique pace. The participants may talk simultaneously and discontinue the other participant to exist the talk. As the text area of the chat history is ordinarily scrolled automatically, participant will have problem when they want to follow the comment of their initiated idea.Introduction to WebQuest intervention as a learning send motion in PBLDifficulties in discussionAimsThe aim of this project is to number an integrate discussion tool to serve the needs of discussion task in WebQuest. We are going to used six thinking hats model as the mechanism in the discussion tool. This project will be an application to Web Quest system (Yeu ng 2009), eyepatch this project provides the student a platform to answer the discussion online based on project based learning and Yeungs system provided a platform for teacher to examine and do the student project.ObjectiveObjective To national the need of a discussion tool in e-learningTo study the problem of exiting discussion toolTo study the advantage of using a collaborative mechanism in PBLTo re take hold of and examine the six thinking hats model as collaborative mechanismTo redesign the model in order to fit the PBLSTo develop a collaborative system for PBLIn this section, we have gone through why there is a need to develop the e-learning resources in Hong Kong, it is because the research suggested that e-learning is sincere for the student and there is a trend to shift the teaching paradigm from cor resolveent learning to the peers learning . Hong Kong Government is totally supported the development of the e-learning resources. The students are as well as preferred to communicate online rather than communicate face to face.Communicate Mediated intercourse and Computer Supported Collaborative learning is cardinal master(prenominal) ideas in this project. In which, we have gone through the meaning of collaboration learning and the make of discussion as the learning activity.Report Organization banter as a learning strategyAskell-Willams and Lawson (2005)5 has carried out a sophisticated study in teaching-learning discussion, they investigated the topic in different aspect, and the overview below is concluded by views of quickise in locatings of psychological, sociological-constructivism and socio-linguists.There is a convincing reason that why discussion fuck serve as teaching and learning purpose. Dillon (1994)6 stated that discussion tail assembly service in understanding of consequence matter and resolution of issues related to the subject matter and its educational function personal growth and understanding of the value of confere nce reflection and deliberation.Discussion is also a primary mechanism in students social transactions. The discussion itself served as a knowledge construction process. Social transactions in classroom can encourage student to put the knowledge into public domain, their reasoning and understands can then be the augmented, examined, elaborated, critiqued and related to the understandings of other people.Tobin, Tippins, and Gallard (1994)7 also stated that the role of discussion provided a perfect platform for students to interact. Group interaction can provide a background in which student can be negotiate differences of opinion and seek apprehension. It is more important that student can generate question and clarify understanding of specific subject area. Peers interaction can develop their ability to speak out, unafraid in order to take a right stand.Based on the social cognitive perspective, discourse is also a primary deliberation tool for cognitive development. Nuthall (199 7)8 proposed that the potential emolument of discourse is transactional relationship between socio-cultural experience and self-organizational activities of the intellect. Such activities of the mind are facilitated through discussion, Askell-Willams and Lawson showed us an example. If a student only acquires knowledge from a teacher, the student will only incorporate the single dependent perspective of the student-teacher relationship. If, on the other hand, the student acquires the knowledge in discussion in which different perspectives are described, explained and debated, the students performance will incorporate with a larger earnings of intertwined social and logical relationships.Problem rose from discussionOf course using discussion as a learning strategy is not suitable in every situation. Baxter, Woodward and Olson (2001)9 showed that learning through class discussion might not effective for those low-achieving students, it is too difficult for them to involved in the d iscussion frequently and they may not have retrieve to speak out according to their shyness.Hollander (2002)10 also noted that the organization of effective discussion at the single level is not straightforward. Some student talk much while other talks little, the content of discussions can be awkward, there is no guarantee that the discussion content will be threaded in a coherent manner and not all students might have developed effective skill for contribution. It should also be noted that, leaving student discuss by their own will not engaging an effective discussion. Many students need specific instruction in order to know how to ask proper questions and give proper respond.Although the expertise may agree that discussion is a potential learning strategy for education, the key stockholder is the learner. If students knowledge is not enough to allow them to make effective use of a discussion, just like how to act effectively, how to ask proper questions and how to give proper r espond, in this situation, the benefit of discussion as a learning approach are unlikely to be study. The value of collaboration and discussion in learning strategy for Online learning EnvironmentFrom the above, we can see that how discussion benefit in students learning, here we will discuss the value of collaboration and discussion in learning strategy for Online Learning Environments (OLEs). Clark(2001)11 stated that although it is achievable that learning with student interaction(passive learning), active learning through interaction including faculty playacting as peers, guides, and moderators is generally consider more effective and well suited to OLEs.Discussion is not like the traditional teacher lecture method of education. Discussion and collaboration increased students involvement in which engages students actively participated in the learning process comparability with the traditional instructor lecture teaching method, discussion are able promote the belonging of stude nts achievement and satisfaction.Clark stated that, although the student and instructor remained as a key player in the discussion as learning strategy, there are still some different between the traditional classroom and OLEs. The draw stated below illustrated their different. The Shift of Face to Face discussion to Computer Mediated DiscussionFrom the last session, we can see that there is advantage of using OLEs in discussion than traditional classroom. How about student? Do they also want to use the electronic resources to learn and interact with each other? An and Frick (2006)12 found that student preferred to use computing machine mediated chat (CMC) than face to face (F2F) as conversation media under certain condition. Here are the reasons flexiblenessThe location and time become an independent variable in CMC such that student can perform discussion on web anywhere.Interactivity increasedThe flexibility of digital learning platform also contributed to the second point, it will increase the interactivity between the students and as well as the instructor. The learning style of the students is thus transform from independent learning to peers learning by the use of computer aids. Sutton (2001)13 (in An and Frick, 2006) suggested that CMC has caused the shift from correspondence learning to social learning. Berge (1995)14 (in An and Frick, 2006) has also suggested the interaction among instructors, students, contents and interface have been maximized in the online discussion and thus facilitate the constructive thinking. relinquish student to learn by their own paceWhen equate to F2F, CMC provide student more time to respond the question. It allows student to analysis and reflect the question with enough time so that they can compose thoughtful responds. Student can thus learn by their own peak in CMC, they can also take control to their learning and interact with the peer in order to build knowledge.Overview of the Discussion Tool Synchronized and Asynchronous Discussion toolDiscussion is definitely a common implementation for Computer Mediate Communication. Generally, online discussion tool can divided in to two types, they are synchronised and asynchronous discussion tool. And as educational platforms, the two distinct format of interaction partake differently. In this session, we are going to investigate the pros and cons of these discussion tools in learning. What is asynchronous discussion tool?According to Johnson(2006)15, asynchronous instruction occurs in delayed time and does not require the simultaneous participation of student and teacher. The asynchronous instruction was used in distance education in the early year cod to postal delays. The asynchronous voice conferencing are already be useful in some instructional contexts, text-based asynchronous instruction are also widely used in the post-secondary education, it can also be considered as asynchronous online discussion.Johnson stated that educators has been investigate the efficiency of asynchronous online discussion, they reported that it can encouraging in-depth, more thoughtful discussion communicating with temporally diverse students prop ongoing discussions where archiving is requisite and allowing all students to respond to a topicThere are also potential limitations of the asynchronous discussion room. Student may not check the forum frequently, privation of spontaneous feedback may lead students feel stray, it is necessary to clear more time in the discussion in order to make it mature.Dede and Kremer (1999)16(in Johnson, 2006) conducted a great deal to check the students preferences of asynchronous discussion tool. They found that the asynchronous discussion provided a more comprehensive interchange for them, but it infallible more time and provided less social interaction than synchronous chat. What is synchronous discussion tool?According to Johnson (2006), concurrent instruction occurs in real time and requires the simultaneous participation of students and teacher. The synchronous instruction was used in the closed circuit video recording on university campus in the early year. Until 1980s, video-conferencing and interactive television machine-accessible remote classroom, in which, the synchronous discussion allow student to ask question and perform interaction in spontaneously, the educators start conduct study how synchronous discussion tool help student in learning. As you can see, synchronous communication tools allow multiple users communicate with each other at the same time using text messages, According to a report investigated by Branon Essex (2001)17 (in Johnson, 2006) showed that synchronous chat tools are useful for holding virtual superpower hours, team stopping point-making, and brainstorming, community building, and dealing with technical issues. Spontaneous feedback can make student feel connected student will not feel isolated in this situation, meanwhile, student are all actively participate in the discussion tool synchronously, not like asynchronous discussion tool, infallible student to login frequently to check for update. But there are still limitations for the synchronous discussion tool. It is difficult to implement synchronous discussion tool compare with asynchronous discussion tool. It is hard to get students online at the same time, and it is difficult in manage big conversation. Lack of reflection time for student and it is demanding for the poor typist.Synchronous Versus asynchronous online discussionEducators are commonly agreed the learning outcome of asynchronous online discussion room is better the personal discussion. But the limitations stated above (isolation and frequently participation) discourage them to use this mechanism alone. There lead to the trend of implementing synchronous chat tool, it is because synchronous chat can override those limitation, as it attempts to emulates face-to-face discussion. Using synchronous cha t not only enhanced social transaction but also repair student learning outcome.Johnson(2006) suggested the best methodological analysis is combining the synchronous and asynchronous chat tool in Online Learning Environment in order to get higher levels of student satisfaction and bid of course requirements than implementation of either mode in isolation. Johnson stated that there is a survey supported student whos used both discussion tools are most likely to achieved the course requirement because using the both tools can maximized personal fight in learning.Review on different discussion modelStructured Academic ControversyThe method was firstly introduced by David W. Johnson and Roger T. Johnson, they are the leading expert in cooperative learning. As titled, academic controversy is a structured discussion strategy by using controversy, in which, controversy means an man-to-man has a different idea and that idea is incompatible with others idea, so two of them need to compro mise in order to reach a common agreement. According to the Cooperate Learning Center, academic controversyuses the intellectual conflict to encourage student to reach higher achievement. It will also enhanced the quality of problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, reasoning, interpersonal relationships, and psychological health and well-beingThere are three goals which release are designed to help the to achieve. They areto gain a deeper understanding of an issue,to set about common ground, andto make a decision based on read and logicThe five procedures in SAC quality 1- Organizing entropy and concludeStudents are crash into two groups, one of them will receive materials which written in supportive side and the other receive material of the enemy side. The groups will discuss in concert to conclude main ideas for present.Step 2 Presenting And Advocating PositionsStudent will present their argument, each side have a extra time to contribute the groups ideas. Afte r the presentation, the other side can have a minute to rebut.Step 3 Uncertainty Created By Being Challenged By Opposing ViewsAfter the disprover of each group, the two sides will be switched. Each of the group will receive material from their opposite side. The students are required to use their material and points they have learnt from the other side originally to formulate points of the opposite view.Step 4 Epistemic Curiosity and Perspective TakingStudents will put down their position and discuss the issue together they are required to find points which they are agree with and resist with based on their evidence from the argument in order to reach concurrence. If the group cannot find a consensus of the topic, they are advice to find a compromised procedure which they could use to resolve the dissimilaritys.Step5 Re-conceptualizing, Synthesizing, and IntegratingIt is a sharing session, the whole class grouped together and discusses how the group worked as a team and how can SAC help them in understanding the issue.confinement of SACStudent may be prejudiced by first impressions, they may not able to change their mind even the evident are support the opposite idea. And thus, it is hard to reach consensus at the end of the process. As SAC involved rebuttal, student may thought they are personal attacked by the criticism if the others student are not handle the rebuttal properly. It is demanding for the low-achieving student to speak out in the group they may not have chance to speak out according to their shyness. courtly communion setThe model was firstly used by the Constitutional Rights Foundation for encourages student to analyst a text material. With the guidance of the team leader, groups member are encouraged to study a selected text material, they will get to know their own points of view in the discussion procedure and eventually build a shared out knowledge within the group. The challenged text material is an essential step for discussion in Ci vil Conversation. The text should be in a proper duration and the conversation will takes place with the students in a circle. The teacher usually acts as a facilitator. The aims of the facilitator areidentify the topic and main points in the text, list what they agree and disagree with in the text, andpose questions about the text they believe are honourable of discussion. The challenged text will organized as a worksheet and contains question which required student to answer. The questions are usually in the below formatWhat is the selection is aboutWhat is the main points areWhat do you agree withWhat do you disagree withA selected question for group discussion, the question should have no simple answer which can only use the materials as evidence.Debrief QuestionsWhat did you learn from the conversation? What did you find you had in common with other members of the group? For anyone not active in the conversation (those good listeners), what did you learn what did you agree with who tell something that you would have said? The four procedures in CCStep 1- Selected a challenged textDivided students into group and band the time limit of the discussionStep 2- Ask for agreement and DisagreementAsk every member to contribute idea on agreement and disagreement (question 3 and 4). Members should carefully listens to others and contribute new ideas based on that.Step3- DiscussionThen ask the entire group to respond to question 5 the predefined discussion question. They are required to jot down the issues raise and they can raise a new problem anytime. The conversation can then continue by discussing the questions raised.Step4 Sharing sessionIt is a sharing session, the whole class grouped together and discusses how the group worked as a team and how can Civil Conversation model help them in understanding the issue. And ask students to outlet to the Reading Guide and answer questions 6 and 7.Step 5 Make enhancement leave off the ideas by asking the student to advise w ays to improve the model. If appropriate, add these suggestions to the conversation rules.LimitationFacilitator is essential in this model. Student needed guideline on how to make a good discussion. As the student usually asks for factual question of the article, it is only good for additional research. A good question should make student to think about an issue, take position and back it up with evidence. As you can see the quality of the discussion is mainly depended on the facilitatorThere is no specific guideline for student to follow while they are taking place to discuss the raised question in step 3. The free-style discussion may lead the discussion out-of -track.Civil Conversation Model are designed to analyst a selected material. It may not fitted the nature of Project Based Learning, in which, student are required to research on the topics and collected additional material by their selves. By doing their own research, they can have new ideas by reconstructing the material. Six Thinking Hats ModelThe Six Thinking Hats Model is a thinking/discussion strategy devised by Edward de Bono in 1994.The model suggested that benignant thinking was divided in 6 session and the model uses 6 different colors to represent each of them, It requires students to extend their way of thinking about a topic by wearing a range of different thinking hatsThe HatsWhite hat thinking focuses on the information available and needed. inglorious hat thinking examines the difficulties and problems associated with a topic.Yellow hat thinking focuses on benefits and values.Red hat thinking looks at a topic from the point of view of emotions and feelingsGreen hat thinking requires imaginative, creative and lateral thinking about a topic.Blue hat thinking focuses on reflection, control and the need to manage the thinking process. The colors help students to visualize six separate modes of thinking and to convey something of the meaning of that thinking. It can be used by student in dif ferent ages, here are the 6 thinking hat model teaching materials for the primary school student and secondary school student.Procedure of using Six Thinking Hat ModelThere is no parliamentary procedure for the six thinking hats model, the model can be fitted in individual thinking and it can also fit in group discussion. While using six thinking hat model in group discussion, usually, it required the group member to pick a color of hat and let them contribute their idea one by one. In this model, the puritanical hat is acted like a facilitator in the group. It aims to manage the thinking process and retell the points contributed by their team member.AdvantagesIt allow student to think out of the box, not like SAC and CC, the six thinking hats model was a straight forward model to lead student to think the issue based on 6 different aspect. Not like SAC and CC, emotion is brought into the model other than focused in evident, it opens up an opportunity for creativity within Decision Making.Instructor is not necessary in 6 thinking hats model compare than Civil Conversation model, it is because student will take their own part as the blue hat controller, and instructor can just sit around and let the student drive the discussion by themselves. Not like SAC, by using six thinking hats model the student will not prejudiced by first impressions. It is because the six thinking hat model is not aimed for controversywhich required student to rebut for each other, it allows student to express their ideas only by role playing.By using this model, there is a directed way the leads the low-achieving student contribute in the discussion.Review on existing systemInstructor Controlled Chat System(ICCS)ICCS (Thirunarayanan, 2000) 23 was proposed to let the instructor involve into the student discussion, it can fix the problem with chat confusion and overlap. He proposed two software enhancements in order to achieve the aimInstructor mediated chatInstructors will have two win dows on their monitor, one is the student discussion window and the other is the instructor control window. Each message raised from the student will send to the instructor window first before published to the other students, the instructor will choose the relevant question / response to publish. Students are only type and respond to the question until the instructor sends the message to the student windowInstructor hints before the chat sectionThe second point is to save short comments questions and statement in the database before the chat session begin. Once the student is lack of idea, the instructor can make use of the pre-saved statements to ask question and remind students to stay focused on relevant topic.Potential problem of ICCSAs the discussion flow is highly depended tSix Thinking Hats Model for Learning ToolSix Thinking Hats Model for Learning ToolAbstractThe aim of this project is to implement an effective discussion tool by using six thinking hats model as the mechani sm. There is a need to implement an effective learning tool for education in Hong Kong. Discuss tool is a kind of them. Although there are many discussion tool available in the web space, most of them are not developed for specific need oddly education. In this project, we used the six thinking hats model as a mechanism in order to develop an effective online discussion tool. The six thinking hats model will use as a mechanism to facilitate the synchronous online discussion. By using this model, a collaborative learning assistance platform will be developed. In this project, we will show you why six thinking hats model is situation for student to learn and the author will also evaluate the proposing environment.IntroductionThere is a need to implement an effective learning tool for education in Hong Kong. Discuss tool is a kind of them. Although there are many discussion tools available in the web space, most of them are not developed for education. In this project, we develop an ef fective discussion tool by using the six thinking hats model as a mechanism. And in this section, we will go through some background information for this project. They are specific definitions related to this project, the need e-learning resource and we will also use the Groupware and 3C Collaboration model to analysis online discussion tool. BackgroundThe need of e-learning resources in Hong KongIn October 2009, the Education Bureau of Hong Kong (2009)1 released a report related to e-learning entitled Working Group on Textbooks and e-Learning Resources Development. The report stated that it is a global trend to use e-learning in education and there is a paradigm shift in school education from a text-based and teacher-centered mode to a more interactive and learner-centered mode. E-learning resources are encouraged to develop in order to enhance the learning effectiveness and provide the student a best mode to learn. The Secretary for Education has announced to launch a three-year Pr omoting e-learning pilot scheme in 20- 30 primary and secondary schools in the 2010/2011 school year. From the above, we can see there is a potential need to develop an effective learning tool for education in Hong Kong based on the government policy. What is Project Based Learning?Project Based learning (PBL) is a conceptual model that fit learning into projects. According to the definitions in the PBL handbook2 for teachers, projects are consist of different tasks, based on challenging problems, that required students to design, problem-solving, decision making, or investigative activities Meanwhile PBL allows the student to work relatively autonomously over extended periods of time and eventually come up with a realistic products or presentations. The definition above is too abstract that cannot distinguish the different between projects and the instance of PBL. According to Thomas (2000)3, he proposed five criteria that an instant of PBL project should have. They are centrality, d riving question, constructive investigations, autonomy, and realism.PBL projects are central, not peripheral to the curriculum.Projects are the curriculum. The central teaching strategy in PBL is the project itself. Students learn the central concepts through projects. The centrality here means students learn things that are outside the curriculum are not examples of PBL. For example, illustrations, examples, additional practice, or practical applications like discussion is only an application of the projects, it is not considered to be the instance of PBL.PBL projects are focused on questions or problems that drive students to encounter (and struggle with) the central concepts and principles of a discipline. The project has to be about a driving question or an ill-defined problem which can motivate the student to learn. The question that student pursue, as well as the applications mentioned in the last paragraph, must be well combined in the service of an important intellectual purp ose.Projects involve students in a constructive investigation. In order to be consider as a PBL project. Based on the PBL project, the students are able to transformation and construction of knowledge, making new understanding and skill by the PBL activities. If the project represents no difficulty to the student or it is about the already-learnt knowledge, the project is an exercise and it is not a PBL project.Projects are student-driven to some significant degreeThere is no expected, predetermined outcome for the PBL projects. It is because the PBL projects not like traditional instruction and projects, it is highly dependent to the students choice, organization and responsibility.Projects are realistic, not school-like.The PBL project give the student a feeling of authenticity, it is because of the topic, the tasks, the roles that the students play incorporates real-life challenges where the focus is on authentic (not simulated) problems or questions and where solutions have the p otential to be implemented. Why Project Based Learning is effectiveAccording to George Lucas Educational Foundation (2001), the project based learning is effective for student as it is student driven, based on this situation, the attendance of the student will increase and thus increase their self-confidence, motivate them to participate in the projectSecondly, research show that the academic gains equal to or better than those generated by other models, with students involved in projects taking greater responsibility for their own learning than during more traditional classroom activities (Boaler, 1997 SRI, 2000 )Opportunities to develop complex skills, such as higher-order thinking, problem-solving, collaborating, and communicating (SRI, 2000)Access to a broader range of learning opportunities in the classroom, providing a strategy for engaging culturally diverse learners (Railsback, 2002)The problemsThere are many discussion tools available in the web space but seldom of them are designed for learning. Especially, they have addition feature to facilitate learning and at least, the usability of the online tools. For the learning facilitation, we would like to point out an effective discussion tools should help the participant to learn systematically. It is because, our brain was train to think inside the box (habit). This may limited our thought and make the discussion low affectivity. For the user usability, chat confusion is one of other problems for online discussion tools. Thirunarayanan, M. O. (2000)4 suggests that there may be chat or conversation overlap in chat rooms as the student and instructor submit their responses at their unique pace. The participants may talk simultaneously and interrupt the other participant to follow the conversation. As the text area of the chat history is usually scrolled automatically, participant will have problem when they want to follow the comment of their initiated idea.Introduction to WebQuestDiscussion as a learning a pproach in PBLDifficulties in discussionAimsThe aim of this project is to build an integrate discussion tool to serve the needs of discussion task in WebQuest. We are going to used six thinking hats model as the mechanism in the discussion tool. This project will be an application to Web Quest system (Yeung 2009), while this project provides the student a platform to perform the discussion online based on project based learning and Yeungs system provided a platform for teacher to examine and manage the student project.ObjectiveObjective To study the need of a discussion tool in e-learningTo study the problem of exiting discussion toolTo study the advantage of using a collaborative mechanism in PBLTo review and examine the six thinking hats model as collaborative mechanismTo redesign the model in order to fit the PBLSTo develop a collaborative system for PBLIn this section, we have gone through why there is a need to develop the e-learning resources in Hong Kong, it is because the re search suggested that e-learning is good for the student and there is a trend to shift the teaching paradigm from correspondent learning to the peers learning . Hong Kong Government is totally supported the development of the e-learning resources. The students are also preferred to communicate online rather than communicate face to face.Communicate Mediated Communication and Computer Supported Collaborative learning is two main ideas in this project. In which, we have gone through the meaning of collaboration learning and the benefit of discussion as the learning activity.Report OrganizationDiscussion as a learning strategyAskell-Willams and Lawson (2005)5 has carried out a sophisticated study in teaching-learning discussion, they investigated the topic in different aspect, and the overview below is concluded by views of expertise in perspectives of psychological, sociological-constructivism and socio-linguists.There is a convincing reason that why discussion can serve as teaching a nd learning purpose. Dillon (1994)6 stated that discussion can benefit in understanding of subject matter and resolution of issues related to the subject matter and its educational function personal growth and understanding of the value of group reflection and deliberation.Discussion is also a primary mechanism in students social transactions. Group interaction can provide a background in which student can be negotiate differences of opinion and seek agreement. It is more important that student can generate question and clarify understanding of specific cont ent. Peers interaction can develop their ability to speak out, unafraid in order to take a proper stand.Based on the social cognitive perspective, discourse is also a primary deliberation tool for cognitive development. Nuthall (1997)8 proposed that the potential benefit of discourse is transactional relationship between socio-cultural experience and self-organizational activities of the mind. Such activities of the mind are facilitated through discussion, Askell-Willams and Lawson showed us an example. If a student only acquires knowledge from a teacher, the student will only incorporate the single dependent perspective of the student-teacher relationship. If, on the other hand, the student acquires the knowledge in discussion in which different perspectives are described, explained and debated, the students performance will incorporate with a larger network of intertwined social and logical relationships.Problem rose from discussionOf course using discussion as a learning strategy is not suitable in every situation. Baxter, Woodward and Olson (2001)9 showed that learning through class discussion might not effective for those low-achieving students, it is too difficult for them to involved in the discussion frequently and they may not have chance to speak out according to their shyness.Hollander (2002)10 also noted that the organization of effective discussion at the individual level is not straightforward. Some student talk much while other talks little, the content of discussions can be awkward, there is no guarantee that the discussion content will be threaded in a coherent manner and not all students might have developed effective skill for contribution. It should also be noted that, leaving student discuss by their own will not engaging an effective discussion. Many students need specific instruction in order to know how to ask proper questions and give proper respond.Although the expertise may agree that discussion is a potential learning strategy for e ducation, the key stockholder is the learner. If students knowledge is not enough to allow them to make effective use of a discussion, just like how to act effectively, how to ask proper questions and how to give proper respond, in this situation, the benefit of discussion as a learning approach are unlikely to be study. The value of collaboration and discussion in learning strategy for Online learning EnvironmentFrom the above, we can see that how discussion benefit in students learning, here we will discuss the value of collaboration and discussion in learning strategy for Online Learning Environments (OLEs). Clark(2001)11 stated that although it is achievable that learning with student interaction(passive learning), active learning through interaction including faculty acting as peers, guides, and moderators is generally consider more effective and well suited to OLEs.Discussion is not like the traditional instructor lecture method of education. Discussion and collaboration increa sed students involvement in which engages students actively participated in the learning process compare with the traditional instructor lecture teaching method, discussion are able promote the belonging of students achievement and satisfaction.Clark stated that, although the student and instructor remained as a key player in the discussion as learning strategy, there are still some different between the traditional classroom and OLEs. The diagram stated below illustrated their different. The Shift of Face to Face discussion to Computer Mediated DiscussionFrom the last session, we can see that there is advantage of using OLEs in discussion than traditional classroom. How about student? Do they also want to use the electronic resources to learn and interact with each other? An and Frick (2006)12 found that student preferred to use computer mediated communication (CMC) than face to face (F2F) as communication media under certain condition. Here are the reasonsFlexibilityThe location an d time become an independent variable in CMC such that student can perform discussion on web anywhere.Interactivity increasedThe flexibility of digital learning platform also contributed to the second point, it will increase the interactivity between the students and as well as the Instructor. The learning style of the students is thus transform from independent learning to peers learning by the use of computer aids. Sutton (2001)13 (in An and Frick, 2006) suggested that CMC has caused the shift from correspondence learning to social learning. Berge (1995)14 (in An and Frick, 2006) has also suggested the interaction among instructors, students, contents and interface have been maximized in the online discussion and thus facilitate the constructive thinking.Allow student to learn by their own paceWhen compare to F2F, CMC provide student more time to respond the question. It allows student to analysis and reflect the question with enough time so that they can compose thoughtful respon ds. Student can thus learn by their own peak in CMC, they can also take control to their learning and interact with the peer in order to build knowledge.Overview of the Discussion Tool Synchronized and Asynchronous Discussion toolDiscussion is definitely a common implementation for Computer Mediate Communication. The free-style discussion may lead the discussion out-of -track.Civil Conversation Model are designed to analyst a selected material. It may not fitted the nature of Project Based Learning, in which, student are required to research on the topics and co llected additional material by their selves. By doing their own research, they can have new ideas by reconstructing the material.Six Thinking Hats ModelThe Six Thinking Hats Model is a thinking/discussion strategy devised by Edward de Bono in 1994.The model suggested that human thinking was divided in 6 session and the model uses 6 different colors to represent each of them, It requires students to extend their way of thinking about a topic by wearing a range of different thinking hatsThe HatsWhite hat thinking focuses on the information available and needed.Black hat thinking examines the difficulties and problems associated with a topic.Yellow hat thinking focuses on benefits and values.Red hat thinking looks at a topic from the point of view of emotions and feelingsGreen hat thinking requires imaginative, creative and lateral thinking about a topic.Blue hat thinking focuses on reflection, control and the need to manage the thinking process. The colors help students to visualize si x separate modes of thinking and to convey something of the meaning of that thinking. It can be used by student in different ages, here are the 6 thinking hat model teaching materials for the primary school student and secondary school student.Procedure of using Six Thinking Hat ModelThere is no parliamentary procedure for the six thinking hats model, the model can be fitted in individual thinking and it can also fit in group discussion. While using six thinking hat model in group discussion, usually, it required the group member to pick a color of hat and let them contribute their idea one by one. In this model, the blue hat is acted like a facilitator in the group. It aims to manage the thinking process and summarize the points contributed by their team member.AdvantagesIt allow student to think out of the box, not like SAC and CC, the six thinking hats model was a straight forward model to lead student to think the issue based on 6 different aspect. It is because the six thinking hat model is not aimed for controversywhich required student to rebut for each other, it allows student to express their ideas altogether by role playing.By using this model, there is a directed way the leads the low-achieving student contribute in the discussion.Review on existing systemInstructor Controlled Chat System(ICCS)ICCS (Thirunarayanan, 2000) 23 was proposed to let the instructor involve into the student discussion, it can fix the problem with chat confusion and overlap. H e proposed two software enhancements in order to achieve the aimInstructor mediated chatInstructors will have two windows on their monitor, one is the student discussion window and the other is the instructor control window. Once the student is lack of idea, the instructor can make use of the pre-saved statements to ask question and remind students to stay focused on relevant topic.Potential problem of ICCSAs the discussion flow is highly depended t

Good Faith and Contract Law
Good Faith and iron out Lawthe governing linguistic rule relevant to all ingests and dealings .This statement was made by Lord Mansfield in 1766 and was an (unsuccessful) attempt to raise hefty trustfulness to the level of a general principle, the usual virtue as it subsequently developed rejected his initiative. The traditional law of pay off, as it became established in England in the second half of the nineteenth century, did not impose or recognise a general responsibleness of technical faith. The notion of best faith undoubtedly pervades English law, but there is no single recognised article of faith of general application. The law is generally ready to strike once morest instances of bad faith for example where lies ar told in pre-contractual negotiations and where the weak atomic number 18 exploited or pressurised the application of images of contract law go away make such contracts void or voidable,. However, no liability or remedy is to be had against the party who, playing in his own best interests, disengages from the negotiations. Moreover, the traditional view of the law is that during the performance of a contract one partys motivation is not relevant to define contractual rights, nor may (bad) motives increase the scope of express obligations. Aside from specific types of contracts, insurance being the notable example, there is no recognised extra-contractual duty on one party to betray facts that may turn break through to be of importance to an early(a) . This can be contrasted with the limit in other countries including Australia and Northern Ireland where the notion of good faith is more readily accepted.Steyn J who foresaw a future for good faith doctrine in English law however such a future has sadly not developed, or if indeed it has developed it has so in a piecemeal fashion. Bingham L.Js scholarship has proven to be closer to reality, he stated when speaking with reference to the incorporation of conditions in cont ractsThe tendency of the English authorities has been to look at the spirit of the transaction and the character of the parties to it to consider what notice the party was given of the particular condition and to resolve whether in all the circumstances it is fair to hold him constrain by the condition. This may yield a result not very different from the civil law principle of good faith, at any crop so far as the formation of contract is concerned .The classical theory of contract appeared to be hostile to the emergence of a general doctrine of good faith. Sir George Jessel M.R. emphasised that their was a strong public interest in maintaining the notion of freedom of contract which would necessarily exclude the notion of good faith If there is one thing which more than another public policy requires it is that men of full and competent understanding shall throw the utmost liberty of contracting, and that their contracts when entered into freely and voluntarily shall be hel d sacred and shall be enforced by Courts of justice. Therefore you have this paramount public policy to consider that you are not thin to interfere with this freedom of contract.A party to a contract could therefore expect that the contract would be enforced according to its basis even if the terms were unfair.Despite these early indispositions to include good faith as part of contract law, it emerged as an definitive and necessary role in some aspects of contract law. The modern law of contract marks more emphasis on conduct which takes account of the interests of the other party to the contract . Some of these specific circumstances will now be considered,The common law imposes a duty of good faith in insurance contracts. The requirement of utmost good faith in insurance contracts requires disclosure by the insured of any fact substantial to the risk and abstention from misrepresentation. The justification for the creation of the duty is that only the insured knows the mater ial facts and the insurer has no reasonable means of discovering them, although this same argument could be advanced in respect of general contract law.Another aspect of good faith arising out of insurance contracts is the rule that an insurer settling claims under a limited liability policy must act in good faith towards the insured and must have regard to his or her interests both in the defence of actions against the insured and in their settlement .The Supreme Court of Ireland have taken a very different view to the principle of good faith in insurance law and this is best highlighted by the case of Aro lane and Land Vehicles Ltd v redress Corporation of Ireland in this case the assured wished to send goods by road via a carrier. At the carriers instigation they effected insurance, the carriers acting as the insurers agents for this purpose. They were asked only for the details of the journey and the value of the goods, and did not volunteer any further information. The lorry carrying the goods was hijacked and set on fire, but the insurers refused to pay out on the policy, pleading that the assured had failed to disclose that their managing director had, some 20 years previously, been convicted of a number of offences of receiving stolen motor vehicles, for which he had served a sentence of 21 months imprisonment. The decision in this case was in summation that this was not reason enough for the insurance policy to be invalidated and the reasoning was that there is no br severally of utmost good faith if the proposer has genuinely forgotten a material fact, at least where there is nothing (eg a purpose form) to jog his memory. Utmost good faith, they say, requires a genuine effort at accuracy, but does not require the proposer absolutely to guarantee the accuracy (and by implication the completeness) of his disclosure. This shows an inherent flexibility in the courts of Ireland to utilise and dismiss the notion of good faith in a sensible manner and th is is evident in the general application of good faith in Ireland.Again in Contracts for the sale of land the vendor of land is under a duty to disclose material matters relating to the title which are known to the vendor but which the emptor has no means of discovering . The duty of good faith also exists in the pursuance situations, the mortgagees exercise of a power of sale, in relation to the principles of equity governing fiduciaries, un referable influence and unconscionable conduct and estoppel, including promissory estoppel and in the duty to refrain from making misrepresentations.More importantly it is suggested that in certain situations there exists a common law duty on the parties to a contract to co-operate in achieving the objects of the contract. Where the parties have agreed that something shall be done which cannot effectively be done unless both parties agree in doing it, there is an implied obligation on each party to do all that is necessary to be done on his o r her part for the carrying out of the thing . This can be seen specifically in the case of Meehan v. Jones where performance of the contract was conditional on the purchaser receiving approval for finance on satisfactory terms. Wilson J considered that there was an obligation on the purchaser to make reasonable efforts to obtain finance on such terms, though we doubted that the purchaser was required to do more than act honestly in deciding whether to accept or reject an offer of finance. That approach to the situation gave effect to the expectations of the parties and achieved a fair and sensible balance of their interests.Another important element of the concept of good faith is that that can be seen in the notion of fiduciary relationships. The principles of a fiduciary relationship require the disclosure of material matters and require the fiduciary to subordinate his or her interests to the legitimate interests of another by reason of the relationship which subsists between t he two parties. It can of course be argued that the fiduciary principle is stronger than the good faith doctrine in that it gives primacy to the interests of the party to whom the fiduciary obligation is owed. The good faith doctrine is concerned with those who contract and are on an equal footing. The principle of good faith also finds reason in the doctrine of unconscionable bargaining, this is the situation where relief is granted when a transaction, is so unconscionable that it cannot be allowed to stand. The requirement is thus that there exists an unconscientious taking advantage of the serious disability or disadvantage of the person in the inferior bargaining position by procuring or retaining the benefit in question in a way that is both unreasonable and oppressive .. In Australia, unconscionability has been relied upon as a ground in relieving a purchaser from forfeit of his equitable interest under a contract of sale pursuant to a notice making measure of the essence of the contract leading to rescission of the contract . Once relief against forfeiture was available specific performance of the contract could be ordered. The purchaser had bypast into obstinance under the contract and erected a house on the land but was unable to pay the balance of the purchase price on the due date. This approach was taken further in the case of an instalment contract for the sale of land under which the purchasers had been let into possession, though they were not entitled to possession until completion, and had built a house on the land . Again, the contract had been rescinded, this time for non-payment of an instalment. In this instance the majority likened a terms contract to a mortgage, the forfeiture provision being by way of security for the payment of the purchase price so that there was no need to establish unconscionable conduct of an exceptional kind. In Australia, the emergence from the shadows of this ground of equitable relief has relegated the doct rine of undue influence to a position of relative unimportance. Unconscionability and undue influence overlap, the last mentioned being more limited in scope, concerned as it is with the exercise by the contracting party of an independent and voluntary will.Perhaps the most important notion of good faith can be found in the law of restitution which transcends the traditional common law causes of action and equitable causa for relief. General principles are being articulated and refined which may apply indifferently, whether the basis of the claim has its origins at common law or in equity. In Lipkin Gorman v. Karpnale Ltd , it was acknowledged that the underlying principle governing the recovery of money had and received at common law in restitution is unjust enrichment. Here again unconscionability underlies the claim for unjust enrichment and imports into contract law the notion of good faith.Good faith and fair dealing concepts are already substantially in place under English l aw, though not in contract negotiation. In that area, the application of specific good faith and fair dealing duties, based on the reasonable expectations of the parties, might advance the interests of justice. Furthermore, recognition of good faith and fair dealing concepts would bring greater coherence and unity to the varied array of principles which are presently available in the area of contract performance. Finally as Mason points out the criticism of those doctrines may be no more than the reluctance to accept unconscionability as a basis for relief in other words, the reluctance is in truth an objection to the application by courts of generalised concepts and standards sort of of rigid rules . As to whether or not there exists a future in English Law for the principle of good faith remains to be seen. There are underlying notions of the principle of good faith and it would seem that the sensible notion would be to codify this principle and make it generally applicable to al l contractual dealings it seems unlikely however that English Law is willing to accept such a principle.BibliographyCasesAro Road and Land Vehicles Ltd v Insurance Corporation of Ireland 1986 IR 403Bridgewater v. History of Barbados :: Essays Papers
The island of Barbados was first inhabited by an Amerindian migrant group called the Saladoid-Barrancoid virtually 350 to 650 AD. Their ancestors are believed to be from the Orinoco Basin in South America. The Spanish were the first Europeans to land on the island in the sixteenth century and reported the Amerindian settlement. However, when the Portuguese explorer, Pedro a Campus landed there in 1536, he claimed that the island was uninhabited. The original inhabitants, the Saladoid-Barrancoid, spoke a language which later became known as Arawakan. They were considered to be skilled farmers and fisherman part also excelling in ceramic crafts. They traded throughout the Caribbean area, which is known because artifacts of the Saladiod-Barrancoid have been found not only on Barbados, but also on neighboring islands. The striver population of Barbados increased greatly between 1643 and 1666. In 1643 the island had 6,400 slaves, and by 1666 they had over 50,000. The wealth of the planter class on the island was becoming more evident. The prosperity of the dirty money industry within Barbados lasted until the early 1700s. The island of Jamaica and some of the Leeward Islands gained prosperity within the sugar industry. The diminishing sugar industry within Barbados was most directly cogitate to their soil, which began to wear out. Barbados also faced problems with insects and drought. The life of those who worked on the plantations was not good. They endured hot temperatures, disease, and were at the mercy of their master. On almost every sugar-producing island, the death rate was higher(prenominal) than the birth rate, and it was known that those that worked on the sugar producing islands were up for a much harsher life than those taken to places like North America. Since the slaves died too quickly to reproduce, the plantation owners were invariably fo rced to bring more slaves in.
